Landing his first job at Roger Corman's studios, Frank Samuel worked his way up from a P.A. to the art department of Talia Shire's directorial debut. While watching John Schwartzman shoot every scene and Francis Ford Coppola walking around set offering advice, Frank realized right then and there that he had to make movies. Thank You, Roger.
After a few more projects at Corman, Frank was hired as the Assistant Art Director on The Mask starring Jim Carrey. The film's box office success presented numerous opportunities for Frank as an art director. Tentpoles such as Batman and Power Rangers all came calling but instead he took an independent film in Austin, Texas- The Underneath, directed by Steven Soderbergh. It was an eye-opening experience in which Frank realized that the pallet and parameters of the art department were ultimately unfulfilling. It was time to move above the line.
Back in Los Angeles, Frank began studying acting with Sharon Chatten and Jeffrey Tambor. During this period amazing opportunities presented themselves from friends working in the advertising world. It was then that Frank found a niche directing television commercials. His previous on-set experiences and in-depth work with actors helped immensely during scene building and casting. He found his calling with directing quirky but real people in slice-of-life situations - keeping it grounded with a twist.
Frank's work for Verizon Wireless, M&M's, IFC Cable, Fox Sports, Oakland A's, Kellogg's, and Visa among others has distinguished him as versatile director who has a knack for finding humor in the most unlikely of places. Even though comedy is his bread and butter, Frank is ultimately interested in people and storytelling wherever they may surface, as evidenced by his keen eye for talent and his ability to spin the briefest ads into tales well told. Numerous awards have been garnered for his work including a Gold Lion at the Cannes Advertising Award Show.
